Paul Kingsnorth's Four Ps
From a post by Paul Kingsnorth on his Substack.
A culture is not the same as a civilization. The latter is built from the top-down, by the use of coercive power. The former emerges from the bottom-up, from a combination of what I call the Four Ps: people, place, prayer and the past.
While I'm not sure I agree with the way Kingsnoth describes culture and civilization, his words do provoke me to think about how the two things work in concert at times, and how they might be at odds at others...
And, regardless of the differences, the idea that there is a difference between coercive power and more organic forms of organization seems correct to me.
